CCJ Removal
How to Remove a CCJ from Your Credit File
14 September 2026 · 6 min read
A County Court Judgment stays on your credit file for six years from the date of judgment — but in the right circumstances it can be removed much sooner. There are only three legitimate ways to do it, and anyone claiming a fourth is selling you something that doesn't exist.
Route 1: Pay in full within one calendar month
If you pay the full judgment amount within one calendar month of the judgment date, you can apply to have the CCJ removed from the public register entirely — as if it never happened. You pay the court a small fee and provide proof of payment, and the judgment is cancelled on the register and disappears from your credit file.
This is the cleanest outcome, but the window is strict. One month and one day is too late.
Route 2: Apply to set the judgment aside
If the claim form was sent to an address where you didn't live, or you never had a fair chance to respond, you can apply to the court to have the judgment 'set aside'. If the court agrees, the judgment is cancelled and removed from your credit file.
Courts generally expect you to apply promptly after discovering the judgment, and to show you have a real defence to the original claim — not just that the judgment is inconvenient. This is the route most of our clients take, and it's where professional preparation makes the biggest difference: the application, the supporting evidence and the witness statement all need to be right first time.
- 01Made by consent: where the original lender agrees to the removal, the court fee is £126 per application and no hearing is usually needed.
- 02Made on notice: where the lender opposes it, the fee is £321 per application and a judge decides at a hearing.
Route 3: Wait six years
If neither of the above applies, the judgment automatically drops off your credit file six years after the judgment date, whether or not it was paid. Paying it (after the first month) marks it as 'satisfied', which looks better to lenders but does not remove it.
What doesn't work
Paying the debt after the first month does not remove the CCJ. Writing to the credit reference agencies asking them to delete an accurate, active judgment does not work either — they are required to report what the court register shows. The only bodies that can remove a judgment early are the courts themselves.
