How to Improve Your Credit Score in the UK: A Practical Guide
28 September 2026 · 7 min read
Credit scores in the UK are run by three agencies — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — and each scores differently. But the behaviours that improve your file are the same everywhere. Here's what genuinely works, roughly in order of impact.
Deal with the big negatives first
No amount of good habits will outscore an active County Court Judgment or a CIFAS fraud marker. A CCJ can cut hundreds of points and will stop most mainstream mortgage and loan applications outright. If you have one, removing or resolving it is the single highest-impact thing you can do — everything below is secondary.
Register on the electoral roll
Lenders use the electoral roll to confirm your identity and address. Not being registered — or being registered at an old address — drags your score down and can cause automatic declines. It takes five minutes at gov.uk and is one of the fastest wins available.
Keep your credit utilisation low
Utilisation is the percentage of your available credit you're using. Consistently using most of your credit card limit signals financial stress, even if you pay in full each month. As a rule of thumb, keeping usage under roughly 30% of your limit helps; under 10% is better. Spreading balances or requesting a higher limit (without spending it) both reduce the percentage.
Never miss a payment
Payment history is the backbone of your file. One missed payment can linger for six years. Set up direct debits for at least the minimum payment on every account so a busy month never becomes a missed payment — you can always pay more manually.
Space out credit applications
Every full application leaves a 'hard search' on your file. Several in a short period looks like desperation and lowers your score. Use eligibility checkers (which use soft searches) before applying, and avoid applying for anything while a major application — like a mortgage — is on the horizon.
Check your file for errors
Mistakes are common: accounts that aren't yours, incorrect addresses, satisfied debts still showing as open, or a CCJ you knew nothing about. Check all three agencies — they hold different data — and dispute anything wrong. If you find a judgment or marker you didn't expect, get it assessed before you do anything else.
Be patient — time is an ingredient
Credit files reward stability: older accounts, longer address history, years of clean payments. There's no legitimate overnight fix. But remove the big negatives, build six to twelve months of clean history, and most people are surprised how quickly their options reopen.
